SoSe 16: The emergence of World Religions in the Nineteenth Century
Sebastian Conrad
Kommentar
In the nineteenth century, the notion of religion experienced a fundamental transformation. On the one hand, the process of secularization began to threaten the place of belief and religious cosmologies in modern society. On the other hand, missionary activity and the rise of world religions helped spread, and transform, religious creed and practices around the world. Over the course of the seminar, we will look into the effects of these transformations for a variety of religions around the world; and we will discuss how a global history perspective may help to understand these changes.
