This interdisciplinary course investigates examples of urban visual culture in Berlin since the Weimar Republic. We will explore the ways in which the diverse aspects of urban life have been represented in cinema and through visual art. Looking at narrative and documentary films, artworks and photography, avant-garde and mass culture, we will retrace how knowledge about the city was being produced. On the one hand these forms of cultural production bear witness to the ways in which we react to or make sense of an ever changing urban environment while at the same time they influence its perception. Readings in theoretical approaches to urban visual culture, urban image and representation will form the basis of our investigation while excursions to museums and exhibitions will introduce a direct experience of historical as well as contemporary developments. The course consists of lectures, group discussions and several excursions. The dates of the excursions will be listed in the syllabus, course materials will be available as a digital reader.
