SoSe 16: V-Culture-Gender-Media I: Victorian Cultures

Kommentar
The first lines of Charles Dickens’s novel A Tale of Two Cities seem to characterize the nineteenth century as a whole: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, ... we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.” The Victorian Age was a time of radical social, political and intellectual changes and social conflicts. This series of lectures will study some of the central issues of nineteenth-century culture, i.e. literary and artistic debates, the ‘Condition-of-England Question’, the conflicts between religion and science, the idealization of middle-class femininity and the concerns about prostitution and fallen women, as well as the tensions and contradictions within the imperial project.
