Entwicklung, Forschung und Evaluation. Variante 1: ohne Vorbereitung MA-Arbeit: Evidence-Based EFL Teaching.
The focus of this seminar is the professional activity of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL), considered both theoretically (as an object of investigation) and practically (as it is realized in the classroom).
The course covers selected issues in teaching English as a foreign language, including Diversity and Heterogeneity, Inclusion, Differentiation in the EFL-classroom, etc. and gives insight into relevant studies and other scholarly publications. These will be critically discussed by the participants together with the lecturer, and linked to theoretical foundations, to the current body of knowledge, and to practical considerations. Drawing on this broad base of knowledge, students will be encouraged to reflect on their own conceptions and beliefs about the EFL-classroom, and on choices and actions as decisive factors of their professional expertise.
Concurrently, students will widen and employ their knowledge of research methods.
Students are expected to attend class regularly and to participate actively, which includes a presentation ("Referat (ca. 10 Minuten) mit Ausarbeitung (ca. 5 Seiten)").
Focus areas: This course will take a detailed look at studies behind practical teaching recommendations, such as: set clear lesson goals, question to check understanding, provide plenty of practice and feedback, let students work in groups, summarise new learning, etc. We will critically investigate meta-meta-analyses by Hattie (2008), leading us into the field of Evidence Based Teaching on the quest for methods that work best in TEFL. The goal is to discuss and deduce implications for the EFL classroom from empirical findings on general factors that influence learning. We will also look into Action Research as a useful tool for teachers to improve their understanding of factors leading students to become better learners.
Course participants are required to attend regularly and to participate actively, which includes a presentation ("Referat (ca. 10 Minuten) mit Ausarbeitung (ca. 5 Seiten)"). The "Ausarbeitung" will be due two weeks after the presentation. Relevant readings will be announced at the beginning of the term.
Literature: Hattie, John (2015): Lernen sichtbar machen. Überarbeitete deutschsprachige Ausgabe von “Visual Learning” besorgt von Wolfgang Beywl und Klaus Zierer. Baltmannsweiler: Schneider.
Marzano, Robert J. (2001): Classroom Instruction that Works. Research-based strategies for increasing student achievement. Alexandria, Virginia USA: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
Wellenreuther, Martin (2014): Lehren und Lernen – aber wie? Empirische-experimentelle Forschungen zum Lehren und Lernen im Unterricht. Baltmannsweiler: Schneider.
