Kommentar
In this introductory course, M.A. students of Islamic, Arabic, and Persian Studies are introduced to the world of manuscripts from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students will acquire skills of the so-called “archeology of the book”, also known as “codicology”, and become familiar with material aspects of Islamic book culture. Furthermore, debates on the social role of manuscripts and archives of the Islamic world will be central.
In this course the students are not only introduced to reference works (secondary literature) and discussion in the field of Islamic Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Sociology and beyond, they are also expected to make use of a hands-on approach, working with collections, and, moreover, gaining familiarity with manuscript reading and production by taking over the role of the scribe, bookbinder or ruler themselves.
