Elena Semenova
Comments
Informality and its societal, political, and economic aspects will be the major focus of our course. We will deal with different aspects of informal politics such as political patronage, politicization of bureaucracy, and political networks. Economic informality will be analyzed using the example of shadow economy. Finally, forms of social informality such as clientelism, blat, and mafia will also be discussed. All forms of informality will be studied in a comparative perspective on concrete examples. We will discuss the following research questions: (1) What are the negative effects of informality on political process, economic development, and social relations; (2) What are possible positive side effects of informality?, and (3) What are the foundations for longevity of informality? close
