SoSe 16: Basic Concepts of Statistical Data Analysis

Systematic treatment of fundamental statistical concepts, ideas and methods of analysis. Explanation of basic concepts like variable, unit of observation, sample, statistical (between-) variation, experimental (within-) variation, correlation and causality, univariate descriptive statistics, bivariate descriptive statistics, statistical inference. Outlook towards multivariate methods.
The approach is hands-on, with an actual data-set and the widely-used computer program SPSS.
Teaching materials such as texts, videos and audios will be disseminated through a mailing list. Details will be given in the first lecture.
