SoSe 16: Researching the Middle East: Qualitative Methods and Methodologies

This seminar is designed to provide students with an introduction to qualitative methodologies with an interdisciplinary relevance for the study of the Middle East and North Africa. The seminar offers students an opportunity to learn how to design, conduct and write up qualitative research, including issues such as conducting fieldwork, research ethics in qualitative research, dilemmas of reflexivity and approaches to the analysis of qualitative empirical evidence. This course focuses on developing a working knowledge of a range of qualitative methods and methodological approaches including but not limited to ethnographic and visual research methods with a particular focus on problematics of knowledge production, the study of religion in the Middle East and North Africa as well as conducting research in/on conflict situations and societies undergoing dynamic socio-political transformations and transitions. Students will be asked to employ knowledge and skills acquired in fieldwork-based group research projects in fullfilment of their course requirements. close
