Regina Scheibe
Comments
What is a basilisk, and why was it linked to royalty? What kind of knowledge might we find in a medieval ghost story? Or what is the political knowledge attached to the dragon-guarded treasure in Beowulf? These are just a few questions which we will attempt to answer during the summer semester. Apart from providing introductions to selected medieval English texts, such as natural encyclopedias, astronomical treatises, lapidaries, devotional texts, epic narratives and romances, the lectures will focus on the explicit and tacit knowledge displayed in these works, the ultimate aim being an overview of the multiple factors which influenced knowledge in medieval English times.
