Susanne Chrambach
Comments
“Languages change all the time and in all aspects” (Bybee 2015: 1). In this seminar, we will take this quotation as the starting point of our discussion of the history of English. We will study the phonological, grammatical and lexical changes that English has undergone in its history and ask why these changes have occurred. Our particular focus will be on the methods and the kinds of evidence that linguists use to study language change. In particular, you will learn how to use two resources: the Oxford English Dictionary and the Penn Parsed Corpora of Historical English. close
