Comments
The seminar entitled “Moving Objects and Shifting Meanings: Chinese Objects and Images in Global Context” would serve as a forum in which to discuss how the culture of China and the identities of Chinese themes and artifacts went through constant changes beyond their homeland, how they were transmitted to its neighboring countries in East Asia and beyond at a certain time in history, and how they were appropriated in accordance with distinctive regional artistic and social settings. The course covers the cultural biography of objects, emphasizing the process of “reception” throughout time, including the complexity of cultural changes that affect said object as well as cultural translation, re-contextualizing symbols and signs as the process of reception, modification, and refusal of social and artistic practice. Buddhist paintings, ceramics, lacquer-ware furniture, woodblock prints, and illustrated books produced in China and circulated globally will be thoroughly explored along with their Korean, Japanese or European copies and reproduction. Drawing on critical concepts and methodologies from the East and West, this seminar explores the material lives of artworks in a variety of media, promoting an object-oriented, theoretical discussion around the shifting relationships among artifacts, people and environments, and the mechanisms deployed for the manipulation, exchange and consumption of artifacts throughout their life stories. close
