SoSe 16: Religion Returns Home
Maren Freudenberg
Comments
This applied seminar casts a closer look at the influence of charismatic American religious groups and practices on contemporary German free (and established) churches. Part theoretical, part methodological, it seeks to provide students with an overview of charismatic religions in the United States – including Evangelical megachurches, Pentecostalism, and “New Paradigm” communities – and with the practical academic tools to explore their recent growth in Germany, particularly in Berlin. After becoming acquainted with various strands of charismatic faith in America, we will practice qualitative empirical research methods – such as interviews and (non-)participant observation – and apply them in charismatic churches in Berlin. Ultimately, students will not only learn about religion as practiced in the United States and Germany, but also become familiar with basic qualitative methods of conducting empirical research in the social sciences. close
