Explanatory Annotation: Close and Distant Reading
This colloquium has two objectives: firstly, it gives students a forum to present and discuss current work on their MA thesis (in German or in English). Secondly, it is situated within the field of digital humanities and aims at combining and critically evaluating the practices of close and distant reading. This includes quantitative methods as much as the explanatory annotation of literary texts. The basis of our discussion in this context will be Franco Moretti’s "Distant Reading"; the quantitative approach will also include the work with electronic corpora. These theoretical considerations will be supple-mented with qualitative analyses. We will, therefore, in a further step, work with existing annota-tions of literary texts and possibly also on a (digital) annotation of a text of our choice. This will allow us to link theory and practice and create awareness of the opportunities and limitations of digital humanities in the field of literary studies.
