Desmond Durkin-Meisterernst
Comments
Following on the introduction to Middle Iranian in the winter semester, this course will concentrate on one Eastern Middle Iranian language, Bactrian, attested on inscriptions and documents from Afghanistan and Tajikistan and even on some fragments found in Turfan in China. A concise grammar will be presented, followed by representative texts. See N. Sims-Williams, Bactrian Documents from Northern Afghanistan I: Legal and Economic Documents, Oxford 2000; II: Letters and Buddhist Texts, London 2007 for most of the texts. See N. Sims-Williams, Ancient Afghanistan und its invadors: linguistic evidence from the Bactrian documents and inscriptions, in: N. Sims-Williams (ed.), Indo-Iranian Languages and Peoples, Oxford 2002, 225-242 for an introduction to some of the linguistic issues.
The course will be in English but explanations will also be provided in German, as required.
