Advanced Seminar
SoSe 16: S-Lit. Stud.: Periods-Genres-Concepts II: "Reading Shakespeare"
Andreas Mahler
Comments
‘Reading’ a play is more often than not only a secondary approach to theatrical productions. It is, however, also an important first step in finding out what a play is supposed to be ‘about’. Accordingly, the seminar, which can be seen as a complement to the lecture on “Early modern English theatre”, will undertake a close and attentive reading of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Participants are expected to have acquired (and read) the play in the Arden 3 edition (eds. Ann Thompson and Neil Taylor) by the beginning of the semester; preparatory reading might be either one of the current Cambridge Companions to Shakespeare Studies or the German Shakespeare-Handbuch (ed. Ina Schabert). close
