SoSe 16: Latin Papyri of the Roman Army
Daniele Salvoldi
Information for students
The language of this Methodenübung is English. Knowledge of Latin is a requirement
(unless majority of students have a non-Classicist background: in this case, texts will be read in translation). Familiarity with Roman history is an advantage close

  Comments
Papyri preserved in different museums provide much information about the organization, administration, society, and economy of the Roman army. Most of these papyri come from Dura Europos and Egypt and are written in Latin, the official language of the army.
The Methodenübung will read a selection of Latin papyri to better understand different aspects of Roman military life, also comparing other sources such as literary texts, inscriptions, and archaeological finds. See "Learning Objectives" for other details close
