Birte Wege
Comments
This seminar will explore feminist theory from second-wave feminism to the present. Beginning with Simone de Beauvoir’s seminal 1949 treatise The Second Sex, we will trace theoretical developments up to and including Sara Ahmed’s Living a Feminist Life (2017). We will discuss works by both mainstream and more radical thinkers, pursuing various approaches and strands of inquiry in a many-faceted field. Theorists to be discussed will include Betty Friedan, Germaine Greer, Gloria Steinem, Valerie Solanas, Luce Irigaray, Shulamith Firestone, Monique Wittig, bell hooks, Audre Lorde, Julia Kristeva, Naomi Wolf, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Judith Butler. Our analysis of theoretical texts will be further supplemented by pertinent literary works by such writers as Margaret Atwood, Adrienne Rich, and Maya Angelou.
