SoSe 17: Revisiting the American Renaissance
Thomas Dikant
Comments
Probably no other period in literary history has become as critical for understanding what constitutes American literature as the “American Renaissance,” a term invented to describe the literature of the mid-nineteenth-century United States. In this seminar, we will start by asking why we speak of an “American Renaissance” and investigate its relation to Romanticism. We will also look at texts through contemporary approaches such as ecocriticism, critical race studies, and queer theory. Authors that we will discuss will include William Wells Brown, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, John Rollin Ridge, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman. close
