Graduate Course
SoSe 17: Case Studies in the Avant-Garde
Kathy-Ann Tan, James Martin
Comments
This course will be co-taught between visiting Fulbrighter Prof. James Martin and Prof. Dr. Kathy-Ann Tan. The first five sessions will lay the groundwork of some theoretical approaches to the avant-garde, as well as focus on the works of John Cage, especially Silence. In the sessions thereafter, we will concentrate on language-oriented poetries. We will read poetry in conjunction/conversation with critical essays that foreground the materiality of language and expand on processes of contingency and aleatory composition that question subject formation in the writing. The work of the following poets will be of particular interest to our readings: Lyn Hejinian, Susan Howe, Bernadette Mayer, Bruce Andrews, Lisa Robertson, Steve Benson, Carla Harryman, Barrett Watten, Bob Perelman, Sean Bonney, Maurice Scully, and others. close
