Comments
Based on the concept of cultural construction this class aims to reveal and analyse “Constructions of Britishness” as they appear in contemporary popular media texts. We will familiarise ourselves with key concepts from the relevant theoretical fields and apply them to diverse texts of any genre or format (TV, film, literature, games, comics, etc.). We want to collect examples of notions of British identity and Britishness in varied forms. Examples of interest can include but are not limited to: working class Britishness, period nostalgia, immigrant Britishness, political satire etc. Your ideas are welcome.
Participants are required to:
- • give one presentation in class as part of a group
- • meticulously prepare theoretical material and reading assignments
- • contribute to discussions in class
- • attend class regularly
- • for credit, submit a term paper (2000-word English language essay).
First session on 27th April.
