Comments
This course will introduce you to sociolinguistics as a specific way of looking at language(s) in general and to varieties of English in particular. Sociolinguistics is all about viewing language as one aspect of human social behaviour. Rather than divorcing language from its speakers and studying it as a self-contained system, sociolinguists are interested in the linguistic variation caused by such social variables as geography, ethnicity, social class, gender, age and discourse. This of course has consequences on our understanding of norms and standards, rules and exceptions, correct and false. The course will provide the background knowledge enabling students to take on an informed and critical position towards linguistic norms and linguistics variation. close
