SoSe 17: Media Effects on Public Opinion
Marlene Kunst
Comments
This seminar deals with media effects on political attitude formation in the digital communication environment. Questions of particular relevance to this seminar are how public opinion is perceived and whether this perception in turn affects individual opinions. In the first part of the seminar, we will explore different theoretical concepts of public opinion and understand the role media plays when it comes to creating and representing public opinion. As the seminar will be guided by the question of how the new media environment, particularly social media, affects the perception process of public opinion, a few sessions will deal with individual political information behavior in the digital age. In the second part, we will go into detail on various theories and concepts, such as pluralistic ignorance and third-person-effect, which explain how people perceive and relate to “what others think”. Current events and phenomena will serve as examples when discussing theories and concepts. In the third part of the seminar, we will design (and conduct) an empirical study which addresses the influence of social media use on perceptions of public opinion and its impact on political attitudes.
