SoSe 17: Feminist Utopias

The year 2015 saw the launch of the website and the book publication of The Feminist Utopia Project – a collection of essays, artwork, interviews, and fiction, which anthologizes various political and literary perspectives that envision a “radically better future.” The Feminist Utopia Project is interesting not only because it exemplifies how the concepts of feminism and utopia are related, but also because it highlights the need for a continuation of feminist struggle in our day.
In this BA course, we will familiarize ourselves with important theories on utopian literature and with the history of feminism, and we will read a broad range of feminist utopian fiction.
Since the feminist utopian text can be understood as both a reaction to and a constitutive factor in the history of female emancipation and woman’s writing in the United States, we will focus on exploring the historical origins of feminist utopias in the works of Margaret Fuller, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and other important literary figures of the 19th century. At the end of this seminar, we will also read more recent works belonging to the field of utopian literature and science fiction, by Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin, and others.
