Topic and Learning Objectives
This seminar seeks to equip students with the necessary skills for conducting quantitative analysis of secondary data sets using the software package Stata. It also reviews important statistical concepts and methods, with a heavy focus on linear regression.
Specific topics include:
1. Basics of statistical inference,
2. Analysis of variance,
3. Linear regression analysis,
4. Data management and handling of missing data,
5. Useful tools for programming efficiently in Stata,
5. Creating publication-style tables and graphs.
Basic statistical knowledge is useful, but not required. If time permits, we will briefly cover more advanced statistical methods such as logistic regression and models for hierarchical and panel data at the end of the course.
It is highly recommended that students prepare for the course by reviewing the material in Chapter 1 of Data Analysis Using Stata by Ulrich Kohler and Frauke Kreuter (see below; any edition is fine).
