SoSe 17: Technologies of Theater: Knowledge Transfer in Early Modern Theatre Cultures /
Jan Lazardzig
Comments
Early modern theatre spectacles are frequently celebrated for their overwhelming effects and marvelous technologies. However, little is known about how the mechanical knowledge for elaborate stage machineries is actually acquired by architects and engineers, and how it disseminates throughout European theatre cultures with regard to specific religious, social, political as well as economical contexts. This seminar looks at early modern European theater cultures from a technological and epistemological perspective: Which sort of mechanical and architectural knowledge constitutes theater buildings, machines and scenography? Where and by whom was this knowledge taught? How did it disseminate and circulate throughout Europe? We will read ancient and early modern treatises and manuscripts on technology and architecture. Methodological and historiographical issues will form an integral part of our discussion. close
