SoSe 17: Science and Technology in the Cold War (MA Global History)
Nadin Heé
Comments
In this seminar, we will explore how the Cold War both shaped and was shaped by science and technology. While Cold War science and technology was often couched in terms of “big science”, recent works on this topic focus instead on variation, be it in terms of scientific fields or geographic locations. Such studies see the Cold War as a global transformation which was fueled, but not determined, by the conflict of the two superpowers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union. We will trace both earlier and more recent trends in the scholarship on the Cold War, and aim to explore both global and local characteristics of so-called Cold War science and technologies. What methodological and theoretical approaches are most fruitful in order to write histories of the Cold War that overcome Eurocentric and monolithic narratives of a bipolar arms race? Finally, we will discuss legacies of the Cold War in today's fields of science and technology. close
