Comments
This course explores the intersection of art and politics, cultural identity focusing on significant monuments and artistic movements in East Asia (China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan) from the nineteenth through twentieth centuries. While investigating socio-cultural context and political circumstances of each region students discuss how political issues and cultural identities are represented, expressed, and mediated through art. This course covers a wide range of media from painting, print, and posters, photography, installation, and performance of art. This course aims to develop students’ visual literacy and critical thinking to contextualize works of art in history, politics, and culture. Drawing on art history, anthropology, politics, museum studies, and colonial, post-colonial theory, students are encouraged to incorporate their own intellectual background and study questions into class discussion and research project. Each class addresses the specific topic, such as Westernization, art under Japanese colonial regime, exhibition and museum, visual propaganda, Asian Diasporas, and artistic movements inspired/reflective critical political events, with the introduction of important works of art and artists from these regions. close
