SoSe 17: Tafsir as Source for Intellectual History
Islam Dayeh
Comments
This course offers an introduction to a variety of exegetical works (Tafsir) on the Qur’an. We will look at the historical development of the genre and the major trends, and examine the ways in which Tafsir is embedded in other branches of Arabic-Islamic knowledge, including grammar, rhetoric, theology, Hadith sciences, Sufism and legal methodology. Particular attention will be given to analysing methodological controversies among the exegetes.
In order to encourage genealogical and comparative perspectives, the course will include several guest lectures on Rabbinic (Daniel Boyarin) and Patristic exegetical traditions (Emiliano Fiori).
