SoSe 17: Arabic Press in the 19th Century

This course will offer an overview of the development of the Arabic press and the role it played in society in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Particular emphasis will be placed on periodicals published in Beirut and Cairo, especially al-Muqta?af founded by Yaq?ub ?arruf (1852-1927) and Faris Nimr (1856-1951) in 1876, and al-Hilal founded in 1892 by Jurji Zaydan (1861-1914). Article-excerpts from Arabic journals will also be analysed with a focus on the most popular debates of the time. close
