SoSe 17: Cultural Theories and Japan
Rein Raud
Comments
This course is targeted for students who are preparing to write their independent research projects / BA theses / MA theses and deals with various cultural theories as applied to Japanese Studies topics. Are Western-based cultural theories - such as Freudian psychoanalysis - applicable as such to Japanese topics? Or would that be an act of cultural imperialism? How well have those Western theorists who have addressed East Asian cultures - such as Barthes and Kristeva - been able to interpret their findings? How do we balance the specifics of particular cultural systems and an overall comparative approach? These are among the questions discussed during the analysis of specific Western theorists and their texts in the context of research on Japan and the students' own specific projects. close
