This course is designed as an introduction to urban history, today one of the most vibrant fields of research in American history. Focusing on the late nineteenth- to the twenty-first century, we will explore the history of urban change in America, including its social, economic, cultural, political, spatial, and environmental dimensions. Special emphasis will be on themes such as urbanization and industrial/technological change, suburbanization, city planning, resources, environmental change, and local politics. We will also discuss the history of social conflict and violence as well as concepts and discourses about the American city in Hollywood films and popular TV features such as “The Wire”.
