SoSe 17: History of Internationalism

What do Vladimir Lenin, Malcolm X, Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan, and
Jane Addams have in common? All of these landmark historical figures
Believed in internationalism and thought that the success of their cause –
Whatever this was – depended on being able to include and engage the entire
world. This graduate seminar will explore the history of internationalism as a
set of ideas and practices from its origins in the second half of the
nineteenth century through the present, adopting a cultural approach to
examine a wide variety of primary sources. Examples of topics covered
include communist internationalism, liberal/conservativeinternationalism,
Black internationalism, feminist internationalism, the history of
international organizations such as the League of Nations and the UN,
and examples of practical international cooperation. In addition, this
course will connect directly with the instructor’s current research on the
“emotions of internationalism” in the interwar period.
