SoSe 17: Major Issues of North American Colonial History
Maria-Michaela Hampf
Comments
American history of the 17th and 18th century comprises two major research perspectives: These are the history of the settler colonies and the colonization of the American continent, but also the Atlantic history of the role of the colonies for their respective “Mother Countries” and the transnational history of the relations and entanglements between them. The seminar will be based on this double perspective. We will look at the social, economic, cultural and economic history of the colonies from the beginning of colonization to the rise of the Altlantic slave trade and the plantation economy to the dawning of the American Revolution. Historiographical debates on the origins of race and racism or the nature and role of colonial warfare will serve as an introduction to relevant theoretical and methodological concepts. close
