SoSe 17: VS-Sociolinguistics and Varieties of English II: Analysing Discourse from Conversation to Public Speech
Truan, Naomi
Comments
In the last decades, ‘discourse’ has been a fashionable term. In this seminar, we will understand discourse analysis as the study of natural language beyond the sentence. Considering that language is never a mere reflection of a pre-existing reality but contributes to constructing reality, we will study discourse and its larger context in order to understand how it affects the meaning of a sentence or a text. The course offers an overview of discourse theory and practice in different regional contexts (France, Germany, UK, US) and academic disciplines. Particular emphasis will be placed on various discourse analytic methods tailored to specific types and genres of oral (conversation) and written discourse (with a focus on political and media discourse) and to specific research questions. The course is taught in English; the literature is also exclusively in English.
