SoSe 18: State and Non-State Legitimacy in Areas of Limited Statehood

This introductory course is designed to make students familiar with the study of the legitimacy of state, external, and non-state actors in areas of limited statehood. The course will introduce students to the concept of legitimacy, focusing on empirical legitimacy as the acceptance governance actors enjoy among local populations. While legal or normative accounts of legitimacy will also find some space in this class, the primary interest is on empirical legitimacy. The empirical focus is on areas of limited statehood e.g. areas in Sub-Sahara Africa, Latin America or Southeast Asia. However, other areas will also be included in the sessions. We will discuss the various sources of state and non-state legitimacy in areas of limited statehood as well a the different consequences legitimacy has for governance. Methodologically the seminar will have a quantitative focus while also including qualitative perspectives. Students will be introduced to various data sources for studying legitimacy such as the Afrobarometer Survey, the Latinobarometer or the Asian Barometer. Additionally, students will also learn about different methodological approaches of analyzing these and other data sources. Participants are not expected to have advanced knowledge in quantitative research methods, but should be interested in getting familiar with quantitative research.
