SoSe 18: Hegemonic Decline in Comparative Perspective

The United States, many argue, is a hegemon in decline. Even if this conclusion is still controversial, we know that no hegemonic state has been able to retain that position indefinitely. Given this fact, this course seeks to understand the causes and consequences of hegemonic decline as experienced by past hegemonic actors, in order to then apply these insights to the contemporary United States. To this end, we will read a diverse range of theories of hegemonic power, hegemonic transition, and hegemonic decline. We will discuss historical case studies of hegemonic decline as experienced by other states in other periods. The aim of the course is to better understand the sources of hegemonic power and its demise in order to assess the contemporary situation of the United States as a global actor. Schließen
