Am I the same person today that I was ten years ago? And if so, why? Is my survival as a person tied to the survival of my body or to the continuation of my memories? Could I survive in another body, if my memories were to be "transferred" to it? And are there even determinate answers to such questions, or should we find new ways of thinking about persons? – These and many related questions form the problem of personal identity, which was first raised in its present form by John Locke and remains a central concern of philosophers today. In the seminar, we will pursue them by reading and discussing the key texts of the debate on personal identity from John Locke to Derek Parfit and beyond. The seminar readings will be supplied on Blackboard, but many of the relevant texts can be found in John Perry (ed.): Personal IdentityUniversity of California Press, 1975 (new edition 2008).
The seminar will be conducted in English.
