SoSe 18: Being Muslim in West-Africa

The Sahel has been in contact with the Muslim world since centuries. When Islam spread southwards during the 19th and 20th centuries, it became an integral part of local cultures. Despite Islam‘s universalist claim, the spread of Islam has formed [fragmented] Muslim societies in West Africa. Based on an anthropology of religion that goes beyond the “Religions of the Book”, this course explores the ways of being Muslim in contemporary West Africa (e.g. the Sufi brotherhoods, the so-called “Wahhabites”, the new Muslims entrepreneurs, and the ‘simply Muslims’). In doing so, it offers critical tools for analyzing the field of mundane religiosity (e.g. religious experiences and new media technologies, youthful aspirations, material success, and political mobilization).
