SoSe 18: Ethnographies of Childhood and Adolescence

Thomas Stodulka

Kommentar

Both classical and contemporary anthropologies of childhood, youth and adolescence define children and youth as social actors in their own right, illustrating their perspectives on, and participation in, their social, cultural and political environments. Since children and adolescents experience their ‘life stages’ differently with regards to their local contexts, this course discusses the similarities and differences of childhood, adolescence and youth across different cultures. We will also elaborate on anthropology’s changing perspectives on childhood and adolescence over the last century.
After introducing anthropological theories on the respective concepts, this course will closely read the following ethnographies and discuss the ways and techniques of doing (i. e. methodology, theorization) and representing ethnography (i. e. styles of writing):
- Mead, Margaret (1928). Coming of Age in Samoa;
- Briggs, Jean (1998). Inuit Morality Play: The Emotional Education of a Three-Year-Old;
- Heinonen, Paula (2013). Youth Gangs and Street Children: Culture, Nurture and Masculinity in Ethiopia;
- Goffman, Alice (2014). On the run: Fugitive life in an American city;
- Stodulka, Thomas (2016). Coming of Age on the Streets of Java: Coping with Marginality, Stigma and Illness.
