SoSe 18: Media and populism in comparative perspective
Anke Fiedler
Kommentar
The rise of populism in Europe continues to dominate the headlines, but there is confusion over how to deal with the phenomenon. While some demand a “cordon sanitaire” to marginalize populist parties, others say that only their political integration can be an appropriate reaction to their increasing relevance. In this seminar, the question is examined of how the “mainstream media” in Germany (and in other regions of the world) deals with populist logic: how do they position themselves with a view to the phenomenon of populism? Do they follow a specific strategy? Students who are interested in finding an answer to this question are requested to regularly participate in the seminar, to read the seminar texts and to conduct a qualitative text analysis of a sample of media contents.
