Anna Islentyeva
Kommentar
This course introduces linguistic research that puts emphasis on the social aspects of language and studies British and American varieties of English in various social contexts. In general, sociolinguists are interested in identifying how the identity of a person or group relates to the way that they use language. The focus of the seminar is thus on both the relationship between the English language and society as well as the various functions of language in society.
Methodologically, the course employs corpus linguistics and other related observational methods, showing how language corpora can be used gainfully in order to aid sociolinguistic research by describing synchronic, diachronic and register variations. The course thus enables students to carry out their own empirical projects on the topic of their choice, using data derived from authentic language material.
