SoSe 18: Introduction to U.S. and Global Environmental History
Sönke Kunkel
Kommentar
This course is designed to introduce students to environmental history, focusing both on North America and its global environmental policies since the 19th century. Questions we will address include: what is environmental history and how do historians write such a history? How have North American views and perceptions of environmental challenges changed? Who contributed to such changes and why? And what’s the role of nature in North American history more generally?
Exploring ideas, discourses, practices and policies of individuals as well as state and non-state actors like the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and international organizations, we will explore themes such as the history of the National Park movement, natural disasters, the post-1945 age of DDT and Agent Orange, the global history of hazardous waste, environmental security, the promotion of sustainability and ‘green cities,’ and global climate change policies. In addition, we will do field trips to discuss current issues such as global climate change policies with practitioners.
