Postcolonialism and environmentalism stand united in their concern with and care for the oppressed, the voiceless, the invisible – be it the subaltern and the (post)colonial subject in general or the natural environment and non-human animals. Colonization and environmental degradation are closely intertwined and often go hand-in-hand. This seminar will explore this interrelation and ask how postcolonialism’s focus on the human subject and ecocriticism’s focus on the non-human environment can be mutually instructive.
