SoSe 18: TELL MARDIKH/EBLA AND THE ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF SYRIA IN 3RD AND 2ND MILLENNIA

This class examines the art and architecture of Syria from the Early Bronze age through the 2nd millennium in terms of tradition and innovation. Selected samples of archaeological, architectural and iconographic evidence from the excavations at Tell Mardikh, ancient Ebla, will be presented and analyzed as the documentation of their interlinked functional relationship. By means of the archaeological evidence from Tell Mardikh, the course also offers a deep insight on the crucial participation of Ebla in the formation of Syrian architectural and artistic idioms, on their legacy, as well as on the impact that Egyptian, Anatolian and Mesopotamian traditions may have had.
