Marie Catherine Menzel
Kommentar
This seminar will be concerned with William Shakespeare’s historical tragedy King Richard II. We will approach the play from a variety of different theoretical perspectives: as literature, as historiography, as early modern drama (historical and cultural context), as serialised storytelling, its potential relevance to modern audiences, adaptations into new media etc.
Students of this course will be required to engage with assigned reading material diligently in preparation for class each week. The edition of the play used in class will be “The Arden Shakespeare (Third Series)” edition (ISBN 978-1-9034-3633-2), which contains extensive editorial notes and useful secondary material. Its purchase is strongly recommended. Additional reading material will be made available to students over the course of the semester.
Regular attendance, active participation in class and one short presentation are mandatory, credits can be obtained by submitting a 2000-word seminar paper. Students are expected to have completed “Basismodul 1: Introduction to Literary Studies”, and are strongly advised to attend the lecture “Surveying English Literatures I” along with this class.
