SoSe 18: Race/Capital/Academia: Genealogy of the American University
Daniel Gutierrez
Kommentar
Since its inception, the (re)production of race and class have been at the heart of the American university's mission. This course will chart a possible genealogy of the transformations of the university in the United States over time, across different compositional epochs and conjunctures, and in relation to broader historical transformations. By the end of this, students should be capable of articulating a more nuanced understanding of the relationship of racism (and its centrality) to American capitalism. This articulation, in turn, will help students examine the historical specificity of the way race is discursively constructed and conjuncturally contingent. Through such abilities, students will be able to distinguish the ways capitalism (and contestations to it) changed the purposes of the university, and will be able to illustrate these historically specific transformations.
