SoSe 18: Global Financial Governance
Sebastian Botzem
Comments
The global economic crisis of 2008 has underlined the relevance of banks, financial services firms, investors and other private actors for the world economy and for public policy-making. In addition, the crisis has stressed the significance of international rules and cross-border regulation. It is less clear, however, how precisely global finance is organized and governed. Therefore, this course will examine the politics of global financial governance and focus on how norms, rules and interests shape formal and informal institutions. We will analyze the activities of different actor groups and investigate the importance of concepts such as expertise, standardization and self-regulation. In addition, we will discuss the interaction of public and private forces in order to understand and explain the current nature of global finance. The course provides a systematic overview of global financial governance and outlines broader implications for international political economy. close
