Seminar
SoSe 18: Comics and American Politics
Thomas Greven
Comments
The politics of interests, values and identity are not limited to
parliaments, lobbies, and other political institutions. Beliefs, opinions
and positions concerning policy are also shaped by what can be taken from
non-political contexts. Media discourse is especially important for this
process and, albeit to a lesser extent, this is true as well for popular
culture media such as film, TV, and comic books and strips. In this
seminar, we will explore the American politics of class and race as well
as debates on US foreign policy, globalization and populism through the
lens of (mostly) American comic books, comic strips and ‘graphic novels.’ close
