SoSe 18: YouTube, Bodycams, CCTV: Micro-Sociology in the 21st Century
Anne Nassauer
Comments
This seminar will provide an introduction to micro-sociological research employing novel types of video footage. The first part of the seminar will discuss the basics of micro-sociology both theoretically and empirically. It will further introduce opportunities and challenges entailed in the analysis of recently available data types, such as mobile phone recordings, CCTV recordings, or body cameras. We will discuss the variety of human behavior and social events these data types capture, and what it means for micro-sociological research that they can increasingly be found on online platforms such as YouTube. In the second part of the seminar, students will collect their own video data on a topic of their choice via YouTube, LiveLeaks, or a similar platform and conduct a micro-sociological analysis of the footage. They will present and discuss their data and analysis in class. The goal is for students to generate a framework of issues and questions for micro-sociological analysis and learn the basics of how to conduct a video data analysis with creativity and rigor. close
