SoSe 18: The Self in Dreams and Culture
Matt Newsom
Additional information / Pre-requisites
This class surveys anthropological theories of the self in combination with perspectives from psychology, dream studies, history, human development, and women’s studies to develop a comparative view of being a person. Students will learn how conceptions of selfhood differ between cultures and what these differences signify about cultural experience. Course readings emphasize the relationship between selfhood and dreaming in a number of societies: Bali, the US, Samoa, Peru, and many more. This course will teach students to analyze their own dreams in order to consider how their own selfhood is shaped by both personal and cultural forces. close
